The city of Montrose is situated in western Colorado, accessible via interstate 70 and USB 50. At the 2020 United States Census, the city population was 20,752. The city sits in the Uncompahgre Valley and is an economic, labor, and transportation way to the surrounding mountains.

Montrose was founded in 1882 and named after Sir Walter Scott's novel A Legend of Montrose. The Denver & Rio Grande Railroad reached the area in July 1883. The town was officially incorporated in 1884. The town grew rapidly as a result of the Uncompaghre Project, which brought water to the Uncompahgre Valley.

Montrose has been mining, agriculture, and transportation. Today, it is a popular western Colorado tourist destination, with a number of museums, galleries, and shops. It is also home to a number of bird species, and the Montrose Botanic Gardens, which hosts a number of plant species.

The Montrose Pavement Music Amphitheater hosts a Summer Concert Series every June. The city also hosts a yearly Arts Festival and the downtown Farmers' Market.

Montrose is a principal city of the Montrose, CO, Micropolitan Statistical Area, which comprises Montrose and Ouray counties.

Montrose is situated in western Colorado, south and west of Colorado's highest peaks, at the bottom of the western Rocky Mountains slope. It is in the Uncompahgre Valley between the Sangre De Cristo and San Juan Mountains to the south and the west, and the Sawatch Range to the north and east.
