Situated 247 miles (395 km) northwest of the Colorado State Capitol in Denver, Grand Junction is a major commercial and transportation hub within the large rural area of western Colorado.

Grand Junction is well-known for its annual festivals and downtown farmers’ market, which draws a large gathering of locals and visitors. The annual Downtown Farmers’ Market runs from June to October, features over 70 fruit and vegetable growers, specialty food producers, and local artisans.

The Downtown Grand Junction spirit of the holiday season is a festive holiday celebration tradition, filled with fun activities for the entire family. On the Saturday following Thanksgiving, downtown businesses, and non-profit organizations partner to create a unique holiday family-friendly experience, ending with a festive fireworks display at Central High School.

Many of the early settlers of the Grand Junction area were farmers, miners, and ranchers. The area’s first major industry was the fruit and produce business, which established Junction as a major fruit producer in the early 1880s. Early settlers grew grapes, strawberries, raspberries, peaches, cherries, and apricots, and shipped their produce east by rail.

Grand Junction gradually transformed from a rural town to a center of commerce and industry. The railroad, coal mining, and natural gas bring prosperity to the town. The city residents gradually shifted towards a more service-based economy, focusing on healthcare, retail trade, and tourism.
