History:
Although settlers arrived in the area now known as Orosi in the late 1800s, it wasn't until the Southern Pacific Railroad arrived in 1874 that the community actually began to take shape. The vast agricultural potential of the area was one of the main factors that drew settlers to it. There were many crops, including grapes, peaches, and cotton. The town was called Orosi after a significant irrigation canal, the Oro Si, the Spanish word for "gold water."
In 1885, the canal was dug to supply water from the Kings River to the agricultural lands farther down the valley. Even though they weren't directly impacted by the gold rush, the people of Orosi profited from providing food to the miners. Throughout the late 1900s, the town's farms continued to grow and diversify their crops, and the community grew gradually.
In 1926, a high school was built, and in 1930 a new elementary school was built next to it. The initial school's location now houses the Orosi Center. More youngsters went to school there when the town's population and the number of farms increased.
The Orosi post office, established in 1876, was the first post office in Tulare County. The post office eventually closed, but in 1882 it was reopened. After the first school was closed in 1888, another one was constructed, and in 1913, a bond issue was brought to a vote to build a larger school, which passed, and Orosi High School was opened in 1914.
