Los Altos was incorporated in 1952 and has a population of around 30,000. The State of California has designated Los Altos as a Tree City USA. In 2018, Money magazine recognized Los Altos as the 33rd "best small town" in the United States.

Education:

The town is served by the Palo Alto Unified School District and the Los Altos School District, which opened its first school, the Los Altos School, in 1880. The Los Altos School District has six elementary schools that serve grades K–6, and the Palo Alto Unified School District has two high schools that serve grades 7–8, one middle school that serves grades 6–8, and one high school that serves grades 9–12. Palo Alto Community College is also located nearby in Los Altos Hills.

Culture:

Los Altos has a diverse population, with 41.7% reporting Asian ancestry, 40.7% White, 20.4% reporting from other races, 2.4% from two or more races, and Hispanic or Latino of any race were 22.4%. There are a variety of festivals and celebrations in Los Altos throughout the year. The Downtown Los Altos Festival is held annually, on the second Sunday of September. The Los Altos Art & Wine Festival is held annually, on the first Sunday of June. And "First Friday" is a monthly celebration in historic downtown Los Altos.

Local attractions:

Los Altos has several notable attractions, including the Los Altos History Museum, the Los Altos Public Library, the Museum of Americana Art, and the Prusch Farm Park. The Los Altos Golf and Country Club is a private country club located immediately west of Los Altos. The 49-acre ranch is nestled in the foothills above Los Altos.

Food:

Los Altos is also home to a variety of shops and restaurants, with a wide variety of ingredients for fresh meat, produce, and other foods. The Certified Farmers Market operates year-round, every Thursday afternoon.

As of 2019, the town's population was 31,920. The population density was 1,977.9 people per square mile. The racial makeup of Los Altos was 21,242 (81.7%) White Americans, 2,036 (8.3%) Asian Americans, 748 (2.7%) African Americans, 132 (0.4%) Pacific Islanders, 488 (1.6%) from other races, and 430 (1.4%) from two or more races. There were 260 people of Hispanic or Latino origin, accounting for 8.2% of the total population.

The most common language spoken at home other than English is Chinese (28.7%), followed by Spanish (12.4%), then Korean (6.0%). Tagalog is also prominent among the Filipino population, with 1.6% of residents reporting they had learnt it as their mother tongue.
