Cypress was a rural farming community founded in 1883 and was named after the Cypress Elementary School that opened there in 1889. In 1956, the city's first suburban shopping center, Cypress Shopping Center, was built, and it has since undergone renovations and became a dead mall.

The local landmark, the Cypress City Lights, is a bright Christmas lights exhibition that can be seen for miles around at the start of every December. When walkways are lined with hand-crafted figurines created by city employees, it gives the impression that the holiday season has arrived. Residents have a wide range of interests, including the annual Halloween “Thrill the World” flash mob and a pumpkin patch.

Cypress has entered into a variety of programs that allow residents to plant trees, construct birdhouses, and create butterfly gardens as part of its “Green Cypress” initiative, highlighting the importance of the city's environmental initiatives.

There is a Japanese-inspired park with walking paths and water features, picnic areas, and playgrounds. Christensen Park tobbogan slide and playground, a disc golf course, and a BMX bike track are additional recreational opportunities. The community center offers cultural and entertaining programs as well as a variety of classes. Cypress College, a two-year community college, is also located in this city.

Unfortunately, Cypress experiences an average crime rate that is somewhat higher than the national average. The chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime in Cypress is 1 in 31, while the state of California's average is 1 in 33.
