In 1866, the first Fort McDowell was established about 15 miles (24 km) east of Florence. In 1870, the fort was moved to the town site of Florence, and the town gradually developed around it. Florence became the county seat of the newly created Pinal County in 1875. By 1900, Florence had 1,500 residents and was growing rapidly.
