History

Demopolis was once home to the Choctaw and Chickasaw tribes, two of the largest Native American tribes in the region. It was also a stronghold of the Creek Confederacy. Settled in 1815, the town became the county seat when Marengo County was established. It became a vital shipping point for cotton, lumber, and other goods. The Tombigbee and Alabama Rivers merged near the town, and river trade was routine. The state's early economy depended heavily on river trade.

Demopolis was the seat of the state legislature during the brief existence of the vigilance committee known as the "Carmichael Raids." In 1954, a band of vigilantes fired on the demonstrators at the state courthouse in a battle to rid the community of undesirable elements. The incident became a shooting war before the National Guard was called in to suppress the demonstrators. In the showdown, five people died, and many were hurt.

The town was spared during the American Civil War and experienced only minor skirmishes during the conflict. The First Battle of Demopolis was April 14-15, 1865, as Confederate generals marched along the river. Union troops had occupied the town earlier that year.
